Keeping Fraudsters at Bay
To keep poker swindlers at bay, you need to first learn the tricks they use to defraud a game. But, even though you may try your best to keep the cheats away from the poker arena, they are bound to remain in any staked game.
Cheating is an action that is committed against the rules to get an unfair advantage over the others. In a live poker game, players often use the dexterity of the hands to cheat fellow players in the game.
One such cheating is known as cold-decking. Here, a set of deck is kept hidden by the cheat. When the cards are given off by the dealer, the cheat takes a look at the deck. If this is not up to his liking, he uses the hidden set of deck instead to play.
Some cheats have wonderful dexterity of the hands and it is near impossible to notice the exchange. Often, well known clubs change the deck after a few games to ensure a fair game session.
Hold-out is yet another method in which charlatans or card mechanics carry out their activities. In this case, a low-value card – or a deadwood – replaces the high-value original card. Sometimes two sets of cards are used and in these cases it is impossible for anyone to notice the difference.
The replacement requires skills as the cards can fall off in an inopportune moment and the cheat would get caught. However, skilled card mechanics sometimes possess eight deadwoods at one occasion.
You would also come across cards that are marked or dented as a means to identify the card during the next game. There are some cards that are marked by professionals. However, marked cards are not used nowadays so much as people are able to identify the defaced cards.
