Lessening Your Tells

September 24th, 2008

Once at the poker table, you’re being watched. Any movement, reaction, or action is constantly being assessed by your opponents. If you think that you can get away with slight body languages, you are wrong. Poker tells are provided unconsciously too. You may not know how your opponent has guessed the big hand you’ve received even though you have not deliberately given any signals.

Experts say that if you are consistent in your behavioural pattern, people would catch you less. In other words, you would not be conspicuous in what you do. For instance, give the same amount of time for all types of hands you get. If you read a flop, devote same time as you would do if you had got a big hand.

Once you get the cards, memorize what you have and try not looking back at it once in a while during the game. The more you peep into the cards, the more tells you are exposing to the others.

Some players have innovative ideas to reduce their poker tells. For instance, some wear hoods, sunglasses and look quite formidable and creepy. There are others who make fun those trying to hide their poker tells through glasses and hats. At first, you might feel funny dressing up for the occasion.

If you cannot hide the poker tells and wants to use better options, go ahead and use it by all means.

In a raise, remember to standardize the raised amount or keep the amount constant throughout the session. If not, you might be asking for trouble. Opponents are on the constant look to get clues from you. If they smell a kind of a pattern in the raise, they’ll exploit it to their own liking.

It is better for amateurs to by silent while playing. Not that being reticent is unfavourable always. Some players, who are good talkers, use the technique to win a good amount of money. However, in most cases talkative players give away vital information regarding the game.
